In Memory Of Kim Bodell

"Bonz"
Kim and Chip

It was a beautiful Spring day when a few of us decided to spread some of Bonz' ashes along this curvy stretch of country road down in Stafford, Virginia. We pulled along the side of the road, dismounted, grabbed Bonz, crossed the road and climbed this little knoll, overlooking a meadow. We spread Bonz' ashes, each of us lost in our own prayer and memories of our Brother. The wind caught a few ashes and I thought, Ride the Breeze Brother, till we meet again.

A few weeks later, I was coming down that curvy stretch of road and as I crested the knoll my car started to lose power on the incline. At the same time I was thinking of Bonz and jokingly said, "Come on Bonz!! Help me up this hill!" Amazingly, the damn car got power from somewhere and flew over the crest of the hill!

As I was puzzling over this, thinking maybe Bonz had given me a push, I came upon a car stopped in the right lane of a two-lane highway. As I came up to the car I merged over to the left to pass. But I noticed the car had stopped because right there in the middle of the road was a young hawk. It seems the hawk may have been hit by a car and stunned senseless. The lady in the other car and I blocked the traffic waiting for this damn hawk to get his bearings and get the hell off the road.

That hawk sure did look funny sitting there in the middle of the road. He was sitting there; with his legs straight out in front of him, flat on his ass. His wings were spread to keep him balanced on his butt! He kept shaking his head, trying to clear it I suppose. He looked just like some kind of cartoon character!

Well, after waiting for a little while and I got to thinking that this bird wasn't able to get off the road without some help. So I got out the car and approached this hawk and was trying to shoo him off to the side of the road. He still looked pretty dazed. But as I approached, he spread his wings, flapped them and took off. Only to do a loop, head right back at me, and crash onto the gravel at the side of the road! Man, if I hadn't of ducked he would have flown straight into my face! His was sitting there, flat on his butt, with his legs sticking straight out. What a sight!

I continued to shoo him away from the side of the road hoping he would go into the cornfield next to the road. Instead this crazy bird took off again only to crash land in the top of a tree a little ways off the road. It was funny as hell, cause when he hit the tree, he slide down a few feet before he caught himself on a lower branch! You could see he was still knocked silly, but I think he was going to be ok.

I climbed back into my car and continued my ride home. I thought again of Bonz helping me up that hill a few miles back and then coming across that hawk. You may think that I'm nuts or something but I would like to believe that that young hawk was Bonz and he just got his new wings. He's just not used to them yet! Lord, I miss that man! Ride the Wind and soar with the eagles my Brother! My friend!
